3 May 1910 my father-in-law was born in Chicago, IL. His name was John "Jack" Joseph Reynolds. Before he died, 21 Jul 1968 in Portland, OR, he never spoke of his family. I found him with his wife, Martha Erkkila, 18 Dec 1917, North Dakota, 15 Feb 2002, Portland, OR, and their son (my ex-husband), John James Reynolds, in the 1940 Chicago, Cook, IL US Census. There are no online records of their marriage or BC for their son, though he was able to order one. Prior to 1940 census, the other document I ordered was a copy of his original Social Security application on which he listed his mother as Bertha Snider, 07 Apr 188l, SC, to Russell Magesty and Josephine, died 29 Sep 1945, Chicago, Cook, IL . When the WWII Registration cards were released on Ancestry, I found John Joseph Reynolds with his mothers married name, Grist: Garnet Evelyn Grist, 31 Dec 1883, England, died 21 Sep 1950, Chicago, Cook, IL, married Bertha 11 Nov 1909, La Porte, IN. 1910 US Census shows Bertha and Garnet, Chicago, Cook, IL with Leonard Snider, 7 yrs. No census records for 1920. 1930 census shows Garnet and Bertha with Elmer, 23 Oct 1910 Chicago, Cook, IL, 1 Jan 1992, Chicago. 1940 census has Garnard and Bertha alone. Elmer married Estelle R Backus, 22 Feb 1917, 11 Aug 2009. Elmer and Estelle had one son, Duane, 1939 Chicago, Cook, IL. married Alice Jane Boudreau 16, Oct 1965. John and Martha had one more child in Chicago, Cook, IL, Patricia Ann Reynolds, 08 Oct 1942. Prior to 1945 the family moved to the Astoria, OR area where they had a third child, Daniel, 13 Jul 1945. Jack was a marine electrician and Martha was a tailor. I have no clue who Jack's father was or even if Reynolds was his name, He could have been illegitimate. Thanks for any help.
